The Desire to Embrace Her

Ahh sleep, you cruel temptress, teasing us with your promises of vim, vitality and vigor. We see you floating there on your wispy cloud in a white flowing robe, sipping chamomile tea and softly quoting Dr. Suess. Sam I Am indeed, my fair lady. But why can't we join you a while longer on your ethereal perch? What evil invisible barriers conspire to keep us apart? Our oft stated love and deep desire to be together unrequited time and again. You fair Juliet to my young Sir Montague.

Thoughts, for one, creep between us from…

So do you have any tattoos? And if so, why? There’s no disputing their stratospheric rise in popularity over the last 30 years. At one time they were considered taboo. The forbidden badges of deviant, hard-core bikers, criminals, rock n’ rollers or lost youth. Today, it would not be a stretch to say a majority of people under the age of 40 have at least one, though I’ve no statistical proof to base this on. There are even several reality TV shows dedicated to the topic. Tattoos are definitely mainstream. We were shocked recently when our daughter was refused employment…

Why the hell was I up so early? The clock is out of site, but you can tell by the degree of darkness you are no where near the time set on the alarm. Not that it matters, but which thing woke me up this time? A flash of light through the blinds, a real or phantom pain, an unnerving dream scene, a poke from one of my likewise restless companions or did I really just have to pee again? Regardless, I’m awake now and the upcoming day’s, week’s or other future events start spinning through my head. Even the…

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog

Weebles wobble, but they don’t fall down

I tawt I taw a puddy tat

There’s a sliver of truth in here somewhere methinks

Hey diddle, diddle, the cat and the fiddle

What else rhymes with paraphernalia

I love the smell of nabob in the morning

For he today that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother

The cow jumped over the moon

Brother can ya spare a dime

My kingdom for a horse

Round and round and round she goes, where she stops, nobody knows

A moose once bit…

Pyromania

Built a small fire in our backyard pit recently, as we’re are often wont to do on cool summer nights. Summer is barely here so the evenings do still bring a chill as demonstrated by my two fireside mates wrapped in blankets for extra warmth.

Back to the fire which starts with a few bits of crumpled newspaper surrounded by two sturdy logs and topped with wee bits o' kindling in turn topped by a few larger pieces of wood. I light a corner of the paper with a flexible butane bbq lighter and watch the bright orange and…

McTaggart took an extra long drag from his king-sized Marlboro and braced himself mentally for the task ahead. In 27 years on the force he’d never experienced anything like what he encountered less than 48 hours ago. Everytime he closed his eyes the grisly images flashed by in rapid succession. Hands and feet bound. Bloody razor sharp barbed wire. A multitude of deep crisscrossed slashes exposing raw muscle and sinew. And, as always, the goddamned signature mask. Lips curled up in a sarcastic sneer. Eyes meticulously sewn shut with bright pink thread. McTaggart knew she was laughing at them. She…

Now this is going to sound like a first world problem, but the pandemic and the resulting slew of lockdowns put a real damper on our weekend morning breakfast routine. The lifting of restrictions has only recently enabled this scene, which happens to be one of my all-time favourites, to start playing out again…

A constant inviting red glow beckons all hungry souls seeking food and comfort. Through a double set of doors, the second of which are equipped with two small silver bells specifically installed to announce our arrival. …

We all have little things we do or don’t do which annoy others and conversely, there are things those around us do which or don’t do which drive us batty. Whether we like or admit it or not, each of us has some level of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder ruling our daily lives. When you live or work with someone long enough, you’re bound to start noticing habits which annoy you. Sometimes they’re called pet peeves, but they’re almost always petty when, and if, you stop to think about them. Problem is, depending on our underlying mood, we often don’t stop…

The rover touched down with a thud just beyond the coordinates provided by Central Command. The plasmic disturbance made for a bumpy ride. The escape hatch slowly opened. Captain Walters and his reconnaissance team crept out of the capsule, phasers set to stun. He vaguely recognized his surroundings, but the streets and walkways were bare. It was eerily quiet as they made their way towards ground zero. Why had their important mission on Cragen 5 been cut short just as they were on the verge of finding the missing crystal? Why could he not get a straight answer from the…

Cuz She…

Cuz she lifts me up and guides my way

The road ahead may be tough to see

But lights right up when she's next to me

Obstacles strewn both here and there

Scare me not within her care

My mind comes back if led astray

Cuz she lifts me up and guides my way

Hand in hand we brave the weather

Always fine when were together

Sharing good times and some bad

They're still the best we've ever had

Making sense of disarray

Cuz she lifts me up and guides my way

Dreamy dreams we dream a lot
